Top 5 Car Launches of This Year

This year saw the launch of several big names in the auto industry. Many others are scheduled to be launched in the coming few months as well. We will take a look at a few launches that have already taken place and a couple waiting in the wings.

The top 5 car launches of the year 2014 are as follows:

5. The Honda City

The fourth generation City was had its world premiere at a Delhi Event in November 2013. The car became available for sale in January. Between January to July 2014 the car proved to be a huge boon for the company with almost 45,900 units sold. The new Honda City now has a sporty look and has a more modern design. Honda has experimented with its new H design on the City. The front and rear of the car as well as the grille, the circular fog lamps have been redesigned. The bonnet has two vertical creases to channelize air.

The very visible aerodynamic drag has been reduced and the overall length has been kept the same. However the wheelbase is absent. The interiors retain many of the old car features but the quality of the plastic is now high. The upper variants have leather upholstery and the lower variants have fabric trim. The steering wheel is larger than the older model and it has buttons for connectivity. There is an Eco button which turns to green if the car is being driven efficiently. The cabin is spacious and boot-space has increased by 4 litres.

Honda claims to be giving a mileage of 26 kmpl for the diesel and 18 kmpl for the petrol variant.

4. Maruti Celerio

Maruti Celerio was launched in the 2014 auto expo and is a B-segment hatchback by Maruti Suzuki brought in to replace the old A-Star. It is a model between Wagon-R and Ritz with a boot and cabin space.

This one has AMT transmission and has been portrayed to be ideal for urban travelling. The Celerio received 58000 bookings but was able to deliver only 28000 as of May. By August it was able to register a 26.9% rise in sales and sold more than 1, 10,776 units of which a major portion might be the Alto and the Wagon R. However what it has achieved is inspiring the car manufacturers to consider the idea of AMT in the small car segment.

Maruti Celerio

The upper variant of the Celerio has two airbags and black- beige upholstery. It has Bluetooth-enabled audio system alongwith electric OVRMs. Two passengers along with a child can sit comfortably at the back and sometimes a third passenger can get in without many complaints. The width of the car might be an issue but the legroom is ample.

The car is available in 4 manual and 2 automatic variants. It has a VXi-CNG variant also. The users have reported a fuel economy of 14 kmpl which is ideal for cities.

3. Hyundai Xcent

The Hyundai Xcent was launched on March 2014 and straight on sold almost 20,000 units since. The design of this car is based on the i-10 compact sedan .It’s attractive new design and feature rich cabin has already created a lot of interest. There are 5 Petrol and 5 diesel Variants and these include Era, Magna, Sportz and Asta. The all new Xcent starts at Rs. 4.66 lakhs for the petrol based and goes up to Rs. 7.38 lakhs for the top of the line diesel model. Look wise it is proportionate and the boot and the sliding roofline merge well.

The car has many firsts in its segment such as rear AC vents, 1 GB hard drive, and a cooled glove box. Other features are front airbags, ABS, real view mirrors which are all electric and fog lamp and turn indicators.

Hyundai Xcent

The car is powered by the 1120 cc Diesel engine which produces 71 bhp and the petrol variants have 1197 cc Petrol engine . There are also 5-speed manual Gearbox and 4 speed automatic Gearbox FWD. This is basically a 5 seater and contains power steering as well. The mileage is 21.13 kmpl for the Diesel version and 17.09 kmpl for the petrol version. The automatic petrol version has a fuel economy of 13.05 Kmpl.

2. Toyota Etios Cross

The Etios Cross is a crossover car and basically the Toyota Liva Hatchback muscled up for rough roads. Since its launch in May it got over 5,400 bookings.

The car comes in 4 variants and 3 engines and transmissions and 2 fuel alternatives. The price ranges from Rs. 6.0 to Rs. 7.5 lakhs for the top variant. It has a large plastic body kit and taller wheels. The roof rails are contrast coloured with a capacity to hold 50-55 kgs of luggage. The interior of the Etios is the same as the Toyota Liva even the layout of the dashboard and different features of the cabin.

The 1.2 Petrol engine produces 79 bhp and 104 Nm of torque while the 1.5 litre version generates 89 bhp and 132 Nm of torque. The fuel economy stands at 23.59 for the diesel and 17.71 Kmpl for the petrol version.

All in all it is a compact SUV with a bold and eye catching look. The interior is spacious and offers a comfortable ride. It is a good ride for the city and even better on highways. It seems like the Toyota Etios Cross is here to stay.

1. Maruti Ciaz

The Maruti Ciaz was launched on October 6 in the highly competitive C-segment sedan market. The car comes with 2 engines and transmissions and 2 fuel options. The front grille has a lot of chrome and sweptback headlight and elongated hood enhance its street presence.

With 10 different variants, the price ranges from Rs. 6.99 lakhs to Rs. 9.80 lakhs for the top variant. The wheel arches are delicate and doors have chrome handles. The forward leaning look of the car has been enhanced by a strong shoulder line.

Maruti Ciaz

The wrap around tail lamps gives the Ciaz a premium look. The rear bumper is large and the reflectors are integrated. All the variants have chrome badges and a lip spoiler. It is 4.545mm in length which is more than its competitors Hyundai Verna and the new Honda city.

The interior is clutter-free and very much like the Swift Dzire. It has keyless entry and exit and other features include Bluetooth connectivity, reversing camera, automatic retract for the ORVMs and reversing camera and navigation system. The fuel economy for the diesel version is 22.61 Kmpl and for the petrol version it is 19.12 Kmpl.

A number of car manufacturers have launches scheduled for the rest of the year. Expected launches are Honda Jazz, Dastun Go+, and Maruti Ertiga Automatic etc. The automatic versions are becoming quite popular because of their improved performance on Indian roads. However the basic needs of the Indian Buyer remain fuel economy and a spacious car which is also quite affordable.
